Afro-Sephardic Judaism refers to the Jewish communities of African descent who maintain a connection to Tora, and Sephardic traditions, particularly those of the Northern Africa known as The Maghreb and The Mashriq. Afro -Sephardic Jews maintain the most complex practices of Judaism. This is largely due to the fact that it embraces the Minhagim (customs) of North Africa and other parts of the world that share Sephardic outlook both in cultural and religious.
On a special note in Tallahassee, FL. is the home of several African Jewish families and individuals who have contributed to the area since the Antebellum period.
Afro-Sephardic Jews are Jews Halachically via ancestry or by giyur who descend mainly from North and East African regions but are not limited to other African countries.
In short this means that Afro-Sephardic Jews are either Jewish from birth or converts to Judaism.
The Afro-Sephardic Community has it's roots dating back to the late 19th century in various parts of north Florida . It granted refuge to formerly enslaved individuals and other Jews with Sephardic roots. In our modern day their is an active group in Tallahassee, FL. focused on the customs of Morocco Sudan, Ethiopia, and some West African groups.
