Afro-Sephardic Jews

 Afro-Sephardic Judaism refers to the Jewish communities of African descent who maintain a connection to Tora, and Sephardic traditions, particularly those of the Northern Africa  known as The Maghreb and The Mashriq. Afro -Sephardic Jews maintain the most complex practices of Judaism. This is largely due to the fact that it embraces the Minhagim (customs) of North Africa and other parts of the world that share Sephardic outlook both in cultural and religious. 


On a special note African Jewish families and individuals who have contributed to the area since the Antebellum period.   



Why Tallahassee?

The documented history of Afro-Sepharic Jews and Judaism has strong roots in the city of Tallahassee. Their documentation, antique artifacts and more all dating back to the Antebellum period. 


Tallahassee, Florida is the home and final resting place of Afro-Sephardic Jews like Antonio Proctor Alfred and Samuel Wahnish.  Afro-Sephardic Jews also helped largely in establishing Agroecology systems that are still supporting the city of Tallahassee today.  Tora V'Ahava of Florida community works diligently to preserve the rich heritage of African Jewry in Tallahassee and surround areas.

 Afro-Sephardic Jews are Jews Halakhically- via ancestry or by Giyur (conversion) who -descend mainly from North and East African regions but are not limited to other African countries. 


In short this means that  Afro-Sephardic Jews are either Jewish from birth or converts to Judaism. 


The Afro-Sephardic Community has it's roots dating back to the late 19th century in various parts of north Florida . It granted refuge to formerly enslaved individuals and other Jews with Sephardic roots. In our modern day their is an active group of sixty individuals in Tallahassee, FL. focused on the customs of Morocco Sudan, Ethiopia, and some West African groups.  


Florida has the richest history of Afro-Sephardic Jews. Tallahassee, Florida has it's sixty plus members, a Mikveh, and a Vaad it also is the home of the largest number of families of Afro-Sephardic Jews.
